The Book Club | Individual by Jessica Belief

Individual, like you.

Call it the rebel in me, but the title of book #9 in our Book Club really grabbed my attention. Individual is a celebration of 15 Australian interiors that don’t conform to latest fads, seasonal ‘must-haves’ or a cookie-cutter design approach.

Speaking their truth, each home reveals the unique personalities of their occupants. But even better - out of this fluid design approach are homes where their owners feel connected, enriched, nurtured and secure. Isn’t that what we all deserve? In my work, it’s so important to get the balance right between design that holds tight to the rule-book, versus a true reflection of the characters who reside within.

Individual Book Review

Each story is a glimpse into the Australian way of life, brought to fruition with beautiful photography from Sue Stubbs. Author, Jessica Bellef is the head of styling at Temple & Webster, Australia’s number one online retailer for furniture and homeware.

Jessica feels like a friend I’d have gravitated to at school, she’s smart, a rule-breaker, creative and intuitive too. Introducing herself at the start of the book, she thanks her parents; “who taught me to never walk past a second-hand store without taking a quick look inside.” Sage advice indeed. She goes on to admit the book would not include a sort-of ‘steal the look – where to buy’ directory, nor would it push certain styles. Instead it’s relaxed with practical tips and suggestions.

Some of our favourite chapters include, “how to find a happy balance in your nest,” “live with children without losing your own style,” and “hairy housemates – living with pets” (I hear you! Straight to page for 170 help). In unique Jessica-style, she provides tips on choosing a palette, balancing function and style, and living better with ‘stuff’.

Individual Book Review

Each story (and home) is distinctly different but all share a common theme; that regardless of financial or spatial limitations, a deeply personal magic can be woven into your home. Also, her definition around collections versus clutter is probably the best I’ve ever read. Think of it as a friendly reminder.

Finally, thank you for your kind feedback about our favourite reads. if you have a special book with dog-eared pages that’s captured your heart, we would love to check it out.
